Napa Valley Summer Home

This Napa Valley summer home, designed by architect Cass Calder Smith, embodies sustainable construction practices into a casual, comfortable place for the clients and their children.  Inspired by California barns, the house is divided into two buildings – one for living and one for sleeping.  Careful attention to this vernacular included retaining all existing trees on site, keeping all cars away from the house, minimal maintenance, no drywall throughout, and the use of alternative materials like rammed earth, Pise (pneumatically installed stabilized earth), and recycled Douglas fir windows.  Warm interior woods, exposed structure, and creative detailing make this residence a precedent in green building, design, and site planning.
